From the 1871 census we find Robert living at Carters House,
Traquair, Peeblesshire. He is a lodger and his occupation is Forester.
Robert HOBKIRK married Annie FOWLER at Traquair, Peeblers, Scotland on 31 December 1874 and they had the following known children:
Elizabeth (Lizzy) HOBKIRK, born 5 November 1875 in Glasgow,
Scotland. Lizzy married Maurice JUMP.
Lizzy and her husband were living
at 232 South Locust, Maroa, Macon County, Illinois in 1930.
Lizzy's neice, Mildred HOBKIRK
was living with them.
Jim HOBKIRK, born 22 December 1876 in Possilpark, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Robert HOBKIRK, born 4 September 1878 in Possilpark, Lanarkshire, Maryhill, Scotland.
William HOBKIRK, born 15 March 1880 in Possilpark, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Annie P. HOBKIRK, born 11 May 1882 in Scotland. She may have married a Mr. Matton.(see 1925 Iowa census)
John HOBKIRK, born 9 December 1884 in Scotland. His wife's name may have been Lily.
Thomas HOBKIRK. (From the 1900 census we learn than Ann had 9 children, 8 of whom are living as of 1900. Thomas is probably the deceased child.)
From the 1881 census we find the family living at 8 Carbeth
Street, Maryhill Civil Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Robert's age is
off a little(age 34, but his occupation is a Sawyer, born in Edinburgh,
Midlothian. He is married to Ann, age 29. Their children are Elizabeth,
age 5, James, age 4, Robert age 2 and William, age 1.,
In 1890 the family immigrated to the USA, but it is not known at this time if Robert, senior, travelled with the family, or if he had passed away. All their children seem to have come to the USA.
By 1895 Annie Fowler Hobkirk was married to James Nilson (or Wilson.) They had the following children:
Margaret Nilson, born March 1895 in Illinois
Grace Nilson, born February 1898 in Illinois
From the 1900 census we find James Nilson(or Wilson) age 50, born
August 1840 in Scotland, immigrated in 1876, married to Ann, born in
Scotland in September 1851 and immigrated to USA in 1890. Margaret
Nilson, age 5 and Grace, age 2, both born in Illinois, and step
children Annie P. Hobkirk, age 18, born in Scotland, immigrated in 1890
and John Hobkirk, age 15, born in Scotland and immigrated in 1890.`
In the 1910 I've only been able to find John and his new bride Lily Southern
