James HOPKIRK and Jane EMSLIE

James was the eldest son of William(1) HOPKIRK and Eliza STEWART

James was born on 2 Oct 1845 at Lasswade and on 14 Oct 1870 he married Jane EMSLIE.
James was a brassfinisher by trade.
Jane was a book gilder, born at Dunbar, Haddington around 1850.

This family lived at 12 Canongate in 1881. Also living in the household were Jane's widowed mother, Mary EMSLIE, then age 73, and boarders David HALLIDAY of Kelso, single, brewer's man, 30 years old, and James HALL of Canongate, single, glassblower, 38 years old.

In 1891 this family was living at 2 Rae's Buildings, Canongate, Edinburgh. Mary Ann HOPKIRK had moved out.

In 1901 the family was living at 17 Temple Park Crescent, Edinburgh. William HOPKIRK had moved out.

James died 26 Oct 1916.

James  HOPKIRK and Jane EMSLIE had the following children: (See a photo of the parents and all the children below)

     William HOPKIRK, born 10 Dec 1871 in Edinburgh. He married Agnes GOODFELLOW.

     Mary Ann(May) HOPKIRK, born 7 February 1874 in Canongate.
          On 27 November 1895 Mary Ann HOPKIRK married James Edwin (Eddie) PARK, a postman.

     James HOPKIRK, born 14 May 1876.  He married Margaret NAIRN.

     Alexander HOPKIRK, born 1878. He married Margaret CAMERON. 

     Elizabeth(Lizzie & Eliza) Stewart HOPKIRK, born 1880 at Canongate, Edinburgh.
          Lizzie married David Scott LAMOND on 21 July 1911 at 56 Lauriston Place. David was a housepainter.

     Jessie Emslie HOPKIRK, born 1883. Her occupation was gold layer. Jessie married Johnnie MILTON.

     Helen(Nellie) Stewart HOPKIRK, born about 1886. Nellie was a gardener by trade.  She married Louis INCISO.
           Nellie must have immigrated to the United States, because her name was placed on the Ellis Island
           Immigration Wall by one of her descendants.
