Henry Glassford HOPKIRK & Frida MORGAN

Henry Glassford HOPKIRK was born in 26 Novmber 1851, the youngest child of James HOPKIRK & Jessie HARDIE

Henry Glassford HOPKIRK married Maxwell Eleanor MacKerras April 27, 1899 at Kingston Ontario. She was born July 22, 1866 and died at London Ontario May 6,1900. She is buried in the Cataraqui cemetery, section D in Kingston Ontario.

He married Frida Margaret Morgan January 15,1907 at Toronto Ontario She was born June 23, 1873 in Ontario Canada and died December 7, 1961 at Toronto Ontario. She was buried at St. James cemetery in Toronto.

There was one issue of this marriage:

     James Hopkirk born September 5, 1908.

Henry Glassford Hopkirk spent his working career in service to the government. Old handwritten notes and some old documents indicate the following:

22 Jun 1868 he was appointed clerk in Post Office department

7 Jan 1871 temporarily transferred to Department of Agriculture acting as private secretary to the Hon. C. Dunkin by order in council

From November 1873 to 1887 he acted as private secretary to many heads of Departments including Sir John A Macdonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada and to Sir Alexander Campbell. His work must have been appreciated since he was presented with an inscribed watch. The inscription on the back read:

     Presented to H G Hopkirk By The Clan Campbell in Canada June 13 1882

1 Feb 1887 Appointed Post Office Inspector - Stratford. A document on file indicates that a

fee of fifteen dollar had to be paid for this appointment.

1 Jul 1887 appointed in full charge of the Post Office division

Sep 1897 appointed inspector of London and Stratford Divisions at headquarters at London

The 1911 Census of Canada shows that the family was living on Toronto Island. Henry

Glassford Hopkirk died in Toronto Ontario June 30, 1914 and is buried at the Cataraqui Cemetery at Kingston Ontario.

From the 1901 Census in London, Ontario, we find Henry HOPKIRK, born 26 November 1851, a Post Office Inspector.
Also in the household is Jane McIlvanne, age 24.

From the 1911 Canadian census at Toronto South we find the following family:

Henry HOPKIRK, age 59 and his wife Frida born June 1873, along with their son:

     James HOPKIRK, born 5 September 1908

Also residing in the household is Henry's neice Mary (Molly) HOPKIRK, born in October 1882, per census.
