William LEE and Ellen ENGLISH


William LEE was born about 1821 in County Limerick and Ellen ENGLISH was born about 1836 in County Tipperary, per the 1901 Irish Census, and they had the following known children:

Ellen LEE, baptised 17 November 1859 in Ballylanders, Limerick, Ireland to Bill LEE and Ellen ENGLISH. The sponsors were:Mo?? LEE and Ella Donovan. View the record here

Mary/(Mairead) Margaret LEE, baptised 20 September 1861 in Ballylanders. The sponsors were Mary LEE and James ENGLISH. View the record
here. This is most likely the Margaret LEE who married Patrick DONOVAN in the mid 1880's. Baptismal record says Mary LEE, but there was a second Mary LEE born around 1868. See below. She was most likely named "Mairead", the Irish name for "Margaret", and she probably ended up using the English spelling of the name. The person writing down the name in the pabtismal record may have only heard "Maire".

Johanna LEE, born 13 December 1865 in Galbally, Limerick to William LEE and Ellen ENGLISH, and the next day, 14 December 1865, she was baptised in Ballylanders to William LEE and Ellen ENGLISH. The sponsors were James Donovan and Ella ENGLISH. View the record

From the Ireland census taken on 31 March 1901 in Townland Knockadea, in the district of Cullane, parish of Ballylanders, in building #5, we find William LEE a farmer age 80, Ellen LEE age 65, Ellen LEE age 35, Bridget LEE age 28, Patrick LEE age 27, and William LEE age 22, all Roman Catholic, and all born in County Limerick, except mother Ellen was born in County Tipperary. Both parents speak Irish and English. Thomas, Mary and Maurice LEE were siblings who grew up in County Limerick, Ireland.

Mary and Thomas moved to the San Francisco area, and Thomas went back to Ireland a few times and visited his brother Maurice and other family members.
