Jacob was the son of John HOBKIRK & Ann MILBURN

Jacob was probably born in 1815 or 1816, based on later census record data.

Jacob HOBKIRK was baptized at Medomsley, Co. Durham on 2 Jun 1817, on the same day as his sister Mary.

On 8 August 1840 Jacob HOBKIRK and Mary ELTRINGHAM were wed at the Church of St. Mary and St. Cuthbert in Chester Le Street

Jacob and Mary had the following known children:

     Mary Ann HOBKIRK, born quarter ending in December 1840 in Durham
 
     John HOBKIRK, born quarter ending in March 1842 in Durham

     William HOBKIRK, born quarter ending in December 1845 in Durham

     Alice HOBKIRK, born quarter ending in March 1848 in Durham

     Elizabeth HOBKIRK, born about 1853 per gravestone data. Died 8 January 1860, age 6 at Burnhope.

     Jacob HOBKIRK, born quarter ending in September 1855 in Durham and died 6 January 1860, age 4 at Burnhope.

     Elizabeth HOBKIRK, born quarter ending in December 1861 in Durham


From the 1841 census we find this family living at Tantobie. Jacob is 23, a coal miner, wife Mary is 20, and daughter Mary is 5 months.

From the 1851 census we find this family living at Crag Head, Holmside. Jacob is 35, a coal miner, wife Mary is 28 and their children are Mary Ann 10, John 9, William 5 and Alice 2.

From the 1861 census we find this family living at 61 Burnhope, Holmside. Jacob is 46, a coal miner, his wife Mary, and children John 19, William 15, and Elizabeth 2 months.

From the 1871 census we find this family living at Butcher's House Shop at Burnhope Colliery. Jacob is 56, a deputy overman at a coal mine, his wife Mary is 48 and daughter Elizabeth is 10. Also in the residence were Thomas Watson aged 21, a butcher, and Thomas Bowes, age 15, a servant.

From the 1881 census we find this family living at Burnhope, Holmside. Jacob is 66, his wife Mary is 58 and daughter Elizabeth is 20.

From the 1891 census we find this family living at 1 Long Wood Row, Lanchester. Jacob is 76, a coal miner, his wife Mary is 67 and their married daughter Elizabeth Walton and her husband Thomas Walton, a colliery winding engineman, and their 2 year old son John

Mary Eltringham  HOBKIRK  passed away on  21 January 1895 and Jacob passed away on 3 January 1896.

We have descendant Tracey Armstrong to thank for supplying the following information from Lanchester gravestones:
"In loving memory of Mary Hobkirk who died 21 January 1895 aged 72 years.  Also Jacob Hobkirk, husband of the above, who died at Burnhope 3 January 1896 aged 81 years.  Also Jacob and Elizabeth Hobkirk, children of the above who died at Burnhope 6th and the 8th of January 1860 aged 4 and 6 years."
