James Hopkirk MONARD was the eldest son and second child of Alexander MONARD and his wife Agnes

James Hopkirk MONARD was born in Scotland around 1838, in Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland per the 1911 census, below.

From the 1841 census James was living with his parents in Hutcheson, Lanarkshire, Scotland at 14 Rose Street.

From the 1851 census the family was living at St. Anne Soho, Middlesex, England

On 26 August of 1860 James Hopkirki MONARD married Caroline STONE at St. Anne, Soho, Westminster, London, England

From the 1871 census we find the following family: James MONARD, age 33, a Cordwainer(this is person who makes shoes from new leather): Caroline Monard, age 37; Maryann, age 9, Alexander age 7; Caroline age 5; William age 3; Gustarvus age 7 months and Rosa HUGO, age 35.

From the 1881 census we learn that James has changed his profession to a professional dancer.

 From the 1891 census we learn James is a School Dancing Master

From the 1911 census we find James Hopkirk MONARD, Widower, age 73, living at 53 Cumberland Market, Regents Park N W, St. Pancras, London, England, a Bootmaker, lives on "own account", born at Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland, So James is back to being a Bootmaker, like his namesake, his great grandfather James Hopkirk(1756-1841), and also his son William James Monard and his granddaughter , see this 1911 census record.  This makes at least 6 generations of shoe or bootmakers.
