The berry girls are listed as step-daughters, so is Naomi his second wife and they are Naomi's children? It would appear so, as their father is listed as born in Illinois, while the father of Barton, Martha and Fredrick is listed as born in England, Like Thomas. Thomas is listed as a farmer.

In the 1900 census we find Mary Ellen Hopkirk, age 70, a widow living at 749 Blake, Salida City, Chaffee County, Colorado. Her birthplace is Kentucky. There is an error in recording the census record as it claims her parents were born in Sweden, which is a mistake by the transcriber. mary is listed as the head of household. Also in the household is her daughter Lucy Copeland, born in 1871, but in Illinois, and Lucy's husband Bart, born in 1864. No one has an occupation. The census record lists the family name as Copeland.

In the 1910 census we find Mary E. Hopkirk, age 80 living at 232 Blake, Salida, Colorado with her Daughter Lucy, age 38, Lucy's husband Bart, age 45 who is now a railroad engineer(Like Lucy's brother Frank before he disappeared), and their sons Ray age 4 and Freddie age 1. Lucy's father was born in Scotland and her mother in Kentucky. Bart is listed as born in Illinois, as was his mother. Bart's father is listed as born in England. This is the first census record where the name is spelled COUPLAND.

In the 1920 census the family is living at 232 Blake, Salida and Barton is still a Locomotive Engineer for a railroad. Raymond is listed as 14 and Fred as 11.

From his gravestone, we know Barton passed away in 1922.

In the 1930 census we find Lucy C. Coupland, head of household, widow, age 58. She owns the home at 232 Blake Street, worth $2,000 and they own a radio. She was born in Missouri, her father born in Scotland and her mother born in Kentucky. Ray E. Coupland is 24, born in Colorado, single, and a machinist for a steam railway. Fred E. Coupland is 21, born in Colorado, single and a salesman in a bakery.

In 1940 we still Lucy living at the 232 Blake Street address, but her last name is spelled COPELAND and she is a widow, age 68, she owns her home and is living by herself..

From the 1940 census we find Fred and his wife Laura May living at 329 F Street, Salida, Colorado. Fred is 31, and a manager of a News Stand. He says he worked 80 hours in the week previous to the census and earned no income in the previous year, but has another source of income. Laura is 27, born in Kansas. She is an Assistant Manager of a News Stand and completed 4 years of high school. She worked 79 hours in the week prior to the census, she said she work 52 weeks in 1939 and earned no income, but has income from other sources. She lists hersehf as an employer. They have no children.
