Earnest HOPKIRK Maude E. BATES

Ernest HOPKIRK was the third son, and youngest child of James(7) Hopkirk and Harriet Emma Toothaker

Ernest was born 3 February 1877 in Lockridge(Coalport), Iowa.

From the 1880 census we find Emma and the 3 children living without James. In June 1880 in Lockridge, Iowa, Emma is age 29, Keeping House. Frank, age 7, Harry, age 5, and Ernest, age 3.

In the 1885 Iowa census, in Township 72(Lockridge), Range 8, Section 31 in the southeast and southwest portions, we find Ernest living with his grandparents on his mothers side. In the household are: Fred Toothaker, age 59, Farmer, born in Maine, Nancy J. Toothaker, age 57, Keeping House, born in Illinois, E#mma Hopkirk, age 35, married, Keeping House, born in Des Moines County, Iowa; Frank Hopkirk, age 11, born in Jefferson County, Iowa; Harry Hopkirk, age 9, born in Jefferson County, Iowa; Ernest Hopkirk, age 7, born in Jefferson County, Iowa.

In Fairfield, Iowa, on 12 April 1899, Ernest Hopkirk and Maude Bates were married. Maude was born about 1880 in Fairfield, Iowa. Maude's father was George Bates.

In the June 4, 1900 census we find this family living with Frank's grandparents and his mother: Frederick S. Tootaker, head of household, a Farmer, born October 1825, in Maine, and both his parents were born in Maine and he is age 74, married for 52 years. Nancy J. Toothaker, wife, age 73, born in July 1826, in Illionois, her parents born in Tennessee, she has been married for 52 years, she had 5 children, 3 of whom are still living,  H. Emma Hopkirk, daughter, age 49, born in May 1851, divorced, born in Iowa, father born in Maine, mother born in Illinois,  3 children, two of whom are still living. Ernest Hopkirk, grandson, a carpenter, age 23, born in February 1877 in Iowa, as were both his parents and he has been married for one year. Maude Hopkirk, age 20, born in April 1880 in Iowa as were both her parents, and she has been married for one year, and she has not yet had any children.

In the 1905 Iowa census we find Frank, born in 1877 in Iowa, married, both parents born in Iowa amd he is living in Scott, Iowa. Maude is born in Iowa in 1880, married, both her parents were born in Iowa and she is living in Scott, Iowa. The census must have been taken before the birth of their son Frederick, who was probably named after Frank's grandfather.

On 12 June 1905 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa their son Frederick Neal(Neal) HOPKIRK was born. Neal died in infancy.

From a 1909 Fort Worth, Texas, city directory Ernest HOPKIRK is a carpenter, residing at 210 N. Burnet 2.

In 1910 Ernest and Maud are boarders at 915 Lamar Street, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. Ernest is 33, born in Iowa. He is a carpenter and does not know where his parents were born. Maud is 28, born in Iowa and her parents were born in Iowa.

In a 1914 Fort Worth, Texas, city directory Ernest HOPKIRK is a foreman, residing at 1223 Missouri Ave., Fort Worth, Texas.

On 12 September 1918 Ernest Hopkirk registered for draft authorities. He was living at 530 West 9th, Davenporrt, Scott County, Iowa. He was 41 years old, born 3 February 1877, white and native born. He was a Carpenter for Stone & Webster, at the Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Illinois. (It is the largest government owned weapons manufaturing plant in the USA, and the 2nd oldest, after West Point, U.S. ARMY museum.)  His nearest relative is his wife Maude E. Hopkirk, 530 West 9th, Davenport, Iowa. Ernest is listed as "tall", "medium" build, "blue" eyes and "dark" hair.

On the 2 January 1920 census we find this couple living at 714 West Weatherford, Fort Worth, Texas, Ernest Hopkirk, age 42, head of household, a Contractor/Carpenter, born in Iowa, and his parents born in Maine(his grandparents were born in Maine) and Maude Hopkirk, age 39, born in Iowa and her father born in Virginia and mother born in Iowa. (Maude's parents birth seems off also)

As of 1 January 1925 Maude E. Hopkirk is age 44, born in Iowa, widowed, living with her father George W. Bates, age 67. Her father is listed as born in Iowa and her deceased mother was Margaret I. Gift, born in Iowa. George is widowed. His father is Joel D. Bates born in Ohio and his mother is Susannah Walmer born in Iowa. They are  living in Buchanan, Jefferson County, Iowa. Note: So Maude lists herself as a "Widow", interesting.


Ernest lived in Texas. His neice Harriet(9) HOPKIRK says that in the late 1920's some woman called from Texas and said she was Ernest's new wife.  Harriet never met her.  Around 1929 Ernest died and someone from Texas called and asked what should they do with the body.  Frank(8) HOPKIRK told them to ship it to Ruskin, Nebraska. Ernest is buried in the Spring Creek Cemetery at Ruskin, Nebraska.


Exactly 40 years after his marriage to Maude Bates, Ernest passed away on 12 April 1929 in Pharr, Hildalgo County, Texas. The death certificate states he is about 52, a carpenter. Names of parents and birhtplace are unknowm, but his body was shipped to Superior, Nebraska.
