William and Laura had no children, as William was killed 18 months later in the Civil War.

William joined the Iowa Infantry shortly after the Civil War started. His Regiment was the 30 Iowa Infantry, Company G.
He earned the rank of Corporal.

He was wounded at Bryces Crossroads, Mississippi, and was transported to Memphis, Tennessee where he died on 8 May 1863.

He is buried at Mound City National Cemetery at Mound City, Pulaski County, Illinois.

Below is a picture of the entrance to the cemetery and William's stone. Our thanks goes to SFC Kathline D. Forrester for supplying the photo of William's gravestone.

There is also a Memorial Plaque at the entrance to the Lockridge cemetery with the names of those Lockridge lads who died in the Civil War. It includes the names of William Hopkirk and his brother Robert.
