Donald Currie HOPKIRK & Helen

(Our thanks goes to David Teague for most of the information on this page)

Donald was the son of Robert HOPKIRK and Mary Elizabeth CURRIE

Donald was born 26 January 1888, 8 Brandfield Street, Edinburgh.

Donald moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada from Glasgow on 31 May 1913, aged 25, on the Allan Steamship Line's "Scandnavian",  in steerage. He was listed as a labourer and disembarked in Quebec. He had become a farmer by trade in Canada, based on his enlistment record linked below. His enlistment record gives his date of birth as 26 January 1889, a difference of exactly one year.

Donald enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 16 November 1917.

This is Donald Currie HOPKIRK about 1917.

Here is a photo of Donald, on the left had side of the photo, in the Canadian Forces.

It appears World War I ended prior to Donald having to go overseas. Given he is wearing his uniform in the picture with Helen, linked below, they probably married around 1918.

In 1929 Donald's brother Tommy visited Donald and Helen in Canada. Donald and Helen had no children.

It is believed that Helen passed away in the 1930's.

In 1959 he traveled from Montreal, Quebec, Canada toaboiard the Empress of France, arriving in Liverpoll on 19 May 1959. His final desitination was Holham, Maffat, Dumfreeshire. He is listed as retired, age 71, trtavelling on a Canadian passport and his visit will be for 3 months. Donald was scheduled to leave the UK on 14 August 1959 Donald departed Liverpool for Montreal, Canada aboard the Empress of France. The shipping line was the Canadian Pacific Railway. Here is the record of his scheduled departure. Notice the record has his line marked with "out" in 3 places. Did he not make the trip?

In the 1960's Donald had moved into a home for single men. He was lonely and not very well, with no one to care for him or to visit.  Donald's brother Jimmy went to see him in 1967, and Jimmy brought Donald back to Scotland to live with Jimmy and Jimmy's wife Joan.
