Adam ALEXANDER & Janet BROWN

From this record  in Joseph Spottiswoode(Joe)  Hopkirk's Genealogical records we find that "Adam ALEXANDER died at age 90, between 1850 and 1854. Wife's name unknown died aged abt 44. Adam and his wife had 1 son name unknown and 3 daughters  Agnes, Isabella, Mary. Aunt Bell died 24/5/85 aged 82.Agnes died on 30 June 1883, aged 86."  This would place Agnes birth as 1797. And there she is, see below!!

Adam Alexandeer would have been born about 1762 to 1766, based on Joe Hopkirk's records, which have been surprisingly accurate.
Adam was probably the child born 27 April 1767 in Kelso, the son of Adam ALEXANDER and Eupham SPENCE, especially since Adam's first son was also named Adam, after the father's father, which is normal Scottish naming tradition.

Adam ALEXANDER & Janet BROWN had the following known children:

Agnes Alexander was born 30 October 1797 in Kelso, Rox, to Adam ALEXANDER and Janet BROWN. Agnes waas christened on 15 November 1797. Agnes died on 30 June 1883 at age 86.

Isabella (Bell) Alexander was born about 1803 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. "Aunt Bell" passed away on 24 May 1885

Adam Alexander was born 1 March 1809 and baptised 28 March 1809 at Kelso, Rox, Scotland.(Since the 1 son's name was listed as "unknown", young Alexander probably died in infancy)

Mary Alexander was born 27 May 1811 and baptised on 16 June 1811 at Kelso, Rox, Scotland

From the 1841 census we find in Gattonside, Rox, Scotland, Adam Alexander, age 60, a Farmer, his daughter Isabel, age 25, and the grandchildren of his daughter Agnes, Robert Spotswood age 4 and Agnes Spotswood age 5.

From the 1851 census we find Adam and his daughter Isabella living in Gattonside in the Melrose Parish. Adam is widowed, 85, a farmer of 50 acres and employees no men. He was born in Kelso. His daughter Isabella is listed as unmarried, age 38, born in Sprouston, Roxburghshire.

Memo, Agnes(b.1797) Alexander's daughter married Joseph Spottiswoode(b1803). Thier daughter Agnes Spottiswoode(1836-1869) married Alexander Hopkirk. They had a son named John Brown Hopkirk(1867-1949). So the "Brown" in his name probably came from his great grandmother Janet Brown. Was her father named John Brown, or did a relative of Janet Brown, named John Brown, die recently?.. Co-incidentily, in the 1871 census there is a John Brown living with the Robert Spottiswoode Family. Is this John Brown a distant relatove?
