Raymond James Whelan was born 16 March 1923 in San Francisco to Michael James WHELAN and Josephine M. WELCH.

From a 1917 San Francisco directory Michael J Whelan and his wife Josephine are living at 129 9th Avenue, and he is a bookkeeper for Mutual Savings Bank.

From the 1930 census we find the Whelan family living at 129 9th Avenue. Michael J WHELAN is 50 years old, born in Nevada. They own their home and it is valued at $10,000. Michael is a Bank Teller, and his parents were both born in the Irish Free State. Michael was 37 years old at first marriage. Josephine is  42, and she was 29 at first marriage. She was born in California around 1888 and both her parents were born in the Irish Free State.  In the 1920 census Josephine was 34, so she only aged 8 years between the 1920 and 1930 census. In the 1920 census they own the home at 129 9th Avenue.(Same house number as the 1917 directory) The 1940 census also has the address as 129 9th.  Children in their home were John J. born about 1919, George F. born about 1921, Raymond J. born around 1923, Catherine born about 1925, and Edward D. born about 1929.

From Michael James Whelan's WWII draft registration card we learn he was born on 12 September 1878 in Gold Hill, Nevada. The family is now living at 240 9th Avenue in San Francisco and his employer is now Crocker National Bank at 1 Montgomery Street, San Francisco. Michael is white, 5 ft 9 inches tall, weighs 185 pounds, blue eyes, gray hair and light complexion.
Here are both sides #1 and sides #2 of his draft registration card. The world War I draft registration card has him working as a bookkeeper for Mutual Savings Bank at 706 Market Street, San Francisco.
Michael James Whelan passed away on 23 September 1967 in San Francisco, he was 89 years old. From his death rfecord we learn his mother's maiden name was KELLY.
From an 1880 census in Gold Hill, Nevada, we find John Whilan, age 39, a miner, born in Ireland. His wife Bridget(Kelly) age 35, keepinghouse, born in Ireland, daughter M.E. Whilan age 6, born in California, daughter A. A. Whilan, age 3 born in California, and a son, M. J. Whilan, age 1 born in Nevada. In the line above them is Mary Kelly, mother, age 68, born in Ireland. So this Mary Kelly was probably Bridget's mother.

Their eldest child, Michael WHELAN was born 16 April 1948 in San Francisco. Michael passed away in 2003.

Raymond passed away on 8 August 1995 in Burlingame, California.

Helen passed away on 19 June 2016 in Burlingame, California
